Al-Baqarah 2:102

وَٱتَّبَعُواْ مَا تَتۡلُواْ ٱلشَّيَٰطِينُ عَلَىٰ مُلۡكِ سُلَيۡمَٰنَۖ وَمَا كَفَرَ سُلَيۡمَٰنُ وَلَٰكِنَّ ٱلشَّيَٰطِينَ كَفَرُواْ يُعَلِّمُونَ ٱلنَّاسَ ٱلسِّحۡرَ وَمَآ أُنزِلَ عَلَى ٱلۡمَلَكَيۡنِ بِبَابِلَ هَٰرُوتَ وَمَٰرُوتَۚ وَمَا يُعَلِّمَانِ مِنۡ أَحَدٍ حَتَّىٰ يَقُولَآ إِنَّمَا نَحۡنُ فِتۡنَةٞ فَلَا تَكۡفُرۡۖ فَيَتَعَلَّمُونَ مِنۡهُمَا مَا يُفَرِّقُونَ بِهِۦ بَيۡنَ ٱلۡمَرۡءِ وَزَوۡجِهِۦۚ وَمَا هُم بِضَآرِّينَ بِهِۦ مِنۡ أَحَدٍ إِلَّا بِإِذۡنِ ٱللَّهِۚ وَيَتَعَلَّمُونَ مَا يَضُرُّهُمۡ وَلَا يَنفَعُهُمۡۚ وَلَقَدۡ عَلِمُواْ لَمَنِ ٱشۡتَرَىٰهُ مَا لَهُۥ فِي ٱلۡأٓخِرَةِ مِنۡ خَلَٰقٖۚ وَلَبِئۡسَ مَا شَرَوۡاْ بِهِۦٓ أَنفُسَهُمۡۚ لَوۡ كَانُواْ يَعۡلَمُونَ

They ˹instead˺ followed the magic promoted by the devils during the reign of Solomon. Never did Solomon disbelieve, rather the devils disbelieved. They taught magic to the people, along with what had been revealed to the two angels, Hârût and Mârût, in Babylon. The two angels never taught anyone without saying, “We are only a test ˹for you˺, so do not abandon ˹your˺ faith.” Yet people learned ˹magic˺ that caused a rift ˹even˺ between husband and wife; although their magic could not harm anyone except by Allah’s Will. They learned what harmed them and did not benefit them—although they already knew that whoever buys into magic would have no share in the Hereafter. Miserable indeed was the price for which they sold their souls, if only they knew!

ٱلشَّيَٰطِينَ

l-shayāṭīna

the devils

كَفَرُواْ

kafarū

disbelieved

Root: كفر

يُعَلِّمُونَ

yuʿallimūna

they teach

Root: علم

ٱلنَّاسَ

l-nāsa

the people

Root: نوس

ٱلسِّحۡرَ

l-siḥ'ra

[the] magic

Root: سحر

وَمَآ

wamā

and what

أُنزِلَ

unzila

was sent down

Root: نزل

عَلَى

ʿalā

to

ٱلۡمَلَكَيۡنِ

l-malakayni

the two angels

Root: ملك

بِبَابِلَ

bibābila

in Babylon

هَٰرُوتَ

hārūta

Harut

وَمَٰرُوتَۚ

wamārūta

and Marut

وَمَا

wamā

And not

يُعَلِّمَانِ

yuʿallimāni

they both teach

any

أَحَدٍ

aḥadin

one

Root: احد

حَتَّىٰ

ḥattā

unless

يَقُولَآ

yaqūlā

they [both] say

Root: قول

إِنَّمَا

innamā

Only

نَحۡنُ

naḥnu

we

فِتۡنَةٞ

fit'natun

(are) a trial

Root: فتن

فَلَا

falā

so (do) not

تَكۡفُرۡۖ

takfur

disbelieve

Root: كفر

فَيَتَعَلَّمُونَ

fayataʿallamūna

But they learn

Root: علم

مِنۡهُمَا

min'humā

from those two

مَا

mā

what

يُفَرِّقُونَ

yufarriqūna

[they] causes separation

بِهِۦ

bihi

with it

بَيۡنَ

bayna

between

Root: بين

ٱلۡمَرۡءِ

l-mari

the man

Root: مرا

وَزَوۡجِهِۦۚ

wazawjihi

and his spouse

وَمَا

wamā

And not

هُم

hum

they (could)

بِضَآرِّينَ

biḍārrīna

at all [be those who] harm

بِهِۦ

bihi

with it

مِنۡ

min

any

أَحَدٍ

aḥadin

one

Root: احد

إِلَّا

illā

except

بِإِذۡنِ

bi-idh'ni

by permission

Root: اذن

ٱللَّهِۚ

l-lahi

(of) Allah

Root: اله

وَيَتَعَلَّمُونَ

wayataʿallamūna

And they learn

Root: علم

مَا

mā

what

يَضُرُّهُمۡ

yaḍurruhum

harms them

Root: ضرر

وَلَا

walā

and not

يَنفَعُهُمۡۚ

yanfaʿuhum

profits them

Root: نفع

وَلَقَدۡ

walaqad

And indeed

عَلِمُواْ

ʿalimū

they knew

Root: علم

لَمَنِ

lamani

that whoever

ٱشۡتَرَىٰهُ

ish'tarāhu

buys it

Root: شري

مَا

mā

not

لَهُۥ

lahu

for him

فِي

fī

in

ٱلۡأٓخِرَةِ

l-ākhirati

the Hereafter

مِنۡ

min

any

خَلَٰقٖۚ

khalāqin

share

Root: خلق

وَلَبِئۡسَ

walabi'sa

And surely evil

Root: باس

مَا

mā

(is) what

شَرَوۡاْ

sharaw

they sold

Root: شري

بِهِۦٓ

bihi

with it

أَنفُسَهُمۡۚ

anfusahum

themselves

Root: نفس

لَوۡ

law

if

كَانُواْ

kānū

they were

Root: كون

يَعۡلَمُونَ

yaʿlamūna

(to) know
